⛉ Habitat for a Commensal
H4aC (Habitat for a Commensal) has been developed for the KANAL contemporary art festival in 2012, curated by Christa Vyvey and Michel De wilde. Angelo Vermeulen (SEADS) designed a space habitat sculpture together with Pieter Steyaert and the engineers and workers of the A&S green energy plant in Oostrozebeke. The artwork referred to the global energy crisis and the world's technological future. The outer structure was inspired by space exploration and planetary settlement. The interior was inhabited by alternative life forms 'feeding' on the energy plant. H4aC (Habitat for a Commensal), incorporates algae in "photobioreactors" in the walls of habitat that were kept alive by sunlight, and houses a computer with a "digital life-form" that fed on electricity from the power plant as well as data from the plant's internal processes. This all refers to the concept of survival and dependence, of building a home in the future, inspired by Mars simulation habitats.
